I read and enjoyed the prequel to this series and was looking forward to book 1. I just finished reading it, and I have to say it is a good start to the series. Finn is still an engaging protagonist, combining teenage conflict with growing ability. His mentors vary, but I think I liked Horatio best. He’s solid, down to earth, and someone Finn can trust. My only complaint is that the story felt a bit rushed. Has Finn really learned enough to be that effective in only a few weeks? Hopefully the author will address this in future books. This series is a little bit steampunk, a little bit more traditional fantasy action. It will be interesting to see how the author develops this over the series
